The Book on Cameron Maybin

Graduated Prospect Info

Now that he's no longer rookie-eligible, The Book is closed on Cameron Maybin as a prospect. This page remains as a historical record of his time in our prospect list.

Last bio and ranking update: 12/1/2008.

FLACameron Maybin
Born 4/4/1987
OF, FLA

He might not be the second coming of Ken Griffey Jr., but this potential five-tooler has a place in the everyday lineup in the very near future, perhaps even this spring: he has the kind of leadoff tools that could finally knock Hanley Ramirez down in the batting order. Look for a good mix of average, steals and power to continue to grow, if slowly, as he nears the big lights.

Player Updates and Notes

Cameron finished September with a .313/.376/.530 in 95 plate appearances. This late-season Maybin is sure a lot better-looking than the spring model: Florida's top prospect has exhausted his rookie eligibility, but should still be one of the league's top young players in 2010.

The Marlins have sent the .202-hitting Cameron Maybin back to AAA, where he can work in a 'lower pressure' environment for awhile. He'll be back in the summer.

After holding back all season, the Marlins finally called future star Cameron Maybin up to the majors this week, and he's responded terrifically, with 10 hits in his first 16 MLB at-bats. He shouldn't need to impress much to lock down the starting job for next year, but he seems determined to do so anyway.

The Marlins are talking as if Maybin will be their starting center fielder right out of spring training in 2008. If they're serious, it could be a long, exciting, and strikeout-filled season for the youngster.
