The Book on Andrew McCutchen

Prospect Info

PITAndrew McCutchen
Born 10/10/1986
OF, PIT

One of the best outfield prospects still in the minors, Pirate super-youth Andrew McCutchen has done nothing but hit since his debut in the summer of 2005. He jumped on the fast track with an impressive leap to Double-A at the end of 2007, and pressed hard during 2008 for a big league opportunity, spending the whole year as a 21-year old at AAA while hitting .283, swatting nine homers and stealing 34 bases. His power has come faster than people expected, which means he has a shot in the deep but talent-poor Pittsburgh field right now. Like the similar Dexter Fowler, he could break in two directions: as a top-of-the-order speed threat, or a middle-of-the-order power bat as he continues to refine his approach at the plate. If his MLB career follows his minor league ascent, expect some early struggles in the majors followed by a relentless rise to greatness.

Player Updates and Notes

Andrew McCutchen singled out of the leadoff spot in his first game as the Pirates' everyday centerfielder last night, and added a second single for an RBI in the seventh. He sure looks like he's ready.

Andrew McCutchen has been called up to join the Pirates, who have officially entered 'sell' mode for 2009. He'll be given every chance to be the everyday centerfielder now that Nate McLouth is no longer with the team.

Outfielder Andrew McCutchen was reassigned to minor league camp today and will play at least the start of the season in the minors. He looked adequate in camp but failed to really impress his strike-zone judgment or baserunning skills, two things that he'll need to play every day to develop.

Pirate centerfielder Nate McLouth has been asked about moving to a corner position, which may portend a callup for young Andrew McCutchen soon. McCutchen is hitting .282 at AAA Indianapolis, with 8 homers and 24 steals. He's as ready as can be, and if the Pirates move one of their veteran corners, he'll be packing his bags quick.

Contrary to what our own eyes saw and notebooks recorded, the Pirates have found a place in their infinite wisdom to send Andrew McCutchen down to AAA to start the season. It seems that even different parts of the same coaching staff can't decide what to do with the young fielder. He's the best option the Pirates have, so let's hope he's only absent from PNC for a month or so.

In what looks like the common-sense choice, Andrew McCutchen appears to have won the spring competition for the center field job in Pittsburgh.
