Evan Longoria
Born 10/5/1985
3B, TB
The Rays have so much talent in their system that it was impossible for Longoria to get a chance in 2007, and even 2008 might be asking too much for someone so young. There may be no in-between with Longoria: Tampa may open the season with the very raw prospect as their primary third baseman, in which case anything from an overmatched .131 to a red-hot .351 is possible... but if they don't, expect the opposite extreme, as he languishes in the minors until September once again, so that the thrifty Rays don't start his MLB salary clock any sooner than they have to. Anyone who remembers Delmon Young's outburst knows that Tampa will be in no hurry to promote someone to the (more expensive) majors until they're sure they will use him, and use him a lot.
Player Updates and Notes
With his two homer performance tonight, Longoria's up to 10 in 54 games. He's still hitting only .254, but it's far from empty. Another week of this and he'll be back in the ROY running after all.

Tampa's new anchor, third baseman Evan Longoria, went 2-for-3 last night with a home run. His average is still a scary .251, but his eight home runs in the middle of that potent lineup are worth quite a lot.

Evan Longoria hit his second home run tonight. His average, though, is a weak .243. He'll have to turn it up a notch to stick in the Tampa Bay lineup for good.

In just his third big-league game tonight, Evan Longoria walked, doubled and homered in four plate appearances.

Evan Longoria is being called up to fill in for the DL'd Willy Aybar. It's a good bet he won't be going back down, and Aybar should be looking for a new job in a couple of weeks.

To the shock of exactly nobody, the St Pete Times reports that the always thrifty Rays will be sending rookie of the year candidate Evan Longoria to AAA to start the season, preferring to use Willy Aybar as their everyday third baseman... and very much preferring not to start Longoria's service clock yet. Since this seems to be a money-driven decision, expect Longoria to be called up for good in Late May or early June, too late to count as a major league service year. If he's going to contend for the ROY, he'll have to have a Braun-esque hot streak to make up for that late start.
