Colby Rasmus
Born 8/11/1986
OF, STL
While often lost among the Prince Fielders and Cameron Maybins of hitting peers, Rasmus possesses a polish that few have at his level, a refinement that extends to his offensive approach, baserunning and defense. He strikes out a bit too much, but when he makes contact it's almost always solid contact: he's often compared to J.D. Drew. Of course, the Cardinals hope he comes with a less fragile set of bones. They received a lot of heat for leaving Rasmus in the minors last year, but the youngster really didn't put up the numbers to show he deserved a big-league position. He'll enter 2009 with the determination he needs to get over the last hump, though his refusal to participate in off-season conditioning probably doesn't bode for a hot start.
Player Updates and Notes
With Rick Ankiel expected to extra, supra-DL rest while recovering from his brain-rattling collision, Colby Rasmus should see the biggest increase in playing time. As a hitter struggling out of the gate, he needs to impress to stay on the MLB roster.

While it's never a good idea to count on this as a GOOD thing, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Colby Rasmus has reported to camp 'significantly bulked up.' Rasmus played no winter ball, and apparently spent his time in the gym instead. Rasmus is looking to improve on a disappointing 2008.

Despite being almost completely recovered from his knee injury, Colby Rasmus will not be called up to the Cardinals in September, according to Tony LaRussa, which means his disappointing year is likely over. LaRussa explained simply that 'he hasn't earned it.'

As a result of the MRI on his left knee, outfield prospect Colby Rasmus will be shut down for the season. He'll also be replaced on the USA Olympic roster. The Cardinals have not yet announced whether Rasmus will opt for corrective surgery, or if rest and rehab will be enough to prepare him for 2009.

Finally starting to show some signs of life, Rasmus has homered three times in his last ten games. It'll be a long climb to .300, but he's got the raw ability to get there.

Rasmus is struggling mightily in AAA, barely holding his average over .200. He's going to have to do a lot better than that to get a shot at the Cardinal outfield.

The Cardinals have traded Jim Edmonds to San Diego for a minor leaguer, which means few obstacles remain between Rasmus and the big leagues.
