The Book on Clay Buchholz

Prospect Info

BOSClay Buchholz
Born 8/14/1984
RHP, BOS

Boston, seeing stars in the future, modeled their development of Buchholz after their previous success with the similar Jon Papelbon. While Dice-K got all the early press last year, it was Buchholz who turned heads with his late-season no-hitter. While talk of a possible six-man Boston rotation for 2008 has fantasy players worried, even a small number of starts from Buchholz will be a good thing to have in 2008. A wider rotation may help keep Buchholz's innings down, of course, which may be a good thing: he's still a couple of good years away from real workhorse status.

Player Updates and Notes

Clay Buchholz was awful in his first look since last September, looking very nervous while giving up five straight hits before recording a single out against the Twins today. He surrendered a total of four runs in two exhibition innings. He'll probably be fine in time, but it was a good reminder of how young and inexperienced he still is.

Clay Buchholz, making only his second MLB start, threw a complete game no-hitter Saturday to beat the Orioles. Buchholz is the first Boston rookie to ever pitch a no-hitter. Buchholz used his deceptive curve and messed-up changeup to strike out nine Orioles. After a performance like this vs Baltimore, the Red Sox are obligated to keep him around to see if he can have the same success actual major league teams.

Clay Buchholz got the Win in his major league debut against the Angels today. He allowed three earned runs in six innings for a picture perfect quality start. The Red Sox will send him back to the minors anyway, but you have to think he just earned himself a September spot with this performance.

After posting a 6-2, 1.69 showing in the Eastern League, Buchholz was promoted to AAA today. In his 85 AA innings this year, the hot lefty allowed just 53 hits, walked 21, and struck out an eye-popping 115. Depending on Jon Lester's progress, Buchholz may be the new best bet to enter the Boston rotation, probably as a September callup. He's got a very high ceiling and will probably be one of the highest ranked rookies for 2008.
