A power bat who shows no signs of patience (while homering every odd day in the Hawaiian League, he put up a .189 average), Clement also announced his intention to stick in MLB, using his September 2007 stint with the Mariners to show off a .375 average and two homers in only nine games: one of them a game-tying pinch hit, the other a ninth inning walk-off. Clearly, Clement an handle pressure.

But Seattle, with star Kenji Johjima already secured, might not be ready to dedicate a locker to Clement just yet. His development won't continue if he's used as a backup to Kenji, and it's unclear whether the Mariners can find a good trading partner willing to give him a full-time gig.

Player Updates and Notes

Jeff Clement is back in the majors again as of this morning, and we can only hope that it's for real this time. He'll catch and DH, and might also see some time at first base as the Mariners finally embrace change and even (gulp) rebuilding.

Oh, Seattle. In a move that defies the numbers and sanity itself, the Mariners are demoting Jeff Clement to AAA, and again turning their DH job over to the increasingly punchless Jose Vidro. This team's really lost the rudder.

The slim hope that Seattle might carry Clement as a third catcher or DH was dashed today as he was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma to start the season. Without an injury, he's likely to stay there for awhile.

Seattle may carry Jeff Clement as a third catcher out of Spring Training. This is mixed news, as it would make for very irregular ABs.
