The Book on Franklin Morales
Prospect Info
Franklin Morales
Born 1/24/1986
LHP, COL
One of several live arms currently making their way through the Colorado system, left-hander Franklin Morales might someday be the best of the bunch... one thing is for sure, he's the most exciting. Able to dial his fastball up to 98 mph while pitching mostly at 94-95, Morales also features a well above average curveball and a much improved changeup over a year ago. Of course, he also has the kind of control that makes it easy to imagine him leading the league in walks, and working with runners on base is not the easiest thing for a young pitcher to deal with. Keep an eye on him, but be thinking about 2009 while doing so.
Player Updates and Notes
As expected, the Rockies have ended their Franklin Morales experiment for the time being, sending the talented but wild pitcher back to AAA to work on his control issues. He won't be back for awhile.

Morales has been suffering from control and command issues all April, and could be on his way to a bullpen role, according to the Denver Post.

What spring? Despite earlier rumblings of a bullpen role, the Rockies are plunking mercurial lefty Franky Morales into their rotation. The fireballing Morales struggled to find the strike zone all spring, walking 10 while striking out 15 on his way to allowing 22 runs in 21 innings. He'll be working without a net in April.

According to pitching coach Bob Apodaca, Franklin Morales is likely to spend at least the first half of the season in the bullpen. Since the durability of Morales's shoulder has been a question mark in the past, and the Rockies are still said to be shopping primary lefthander Brian Fuentes around, this move makes decent sense.
