The Book on Wade Davis

Prospect Info

TBWade Davis
Born 9/7/1985
RHP, TB

Jacob McGee's old rotation partner in the Midwest League, righthander Wade Davis might end up the more successful MLB player. And since Tampa runs its team on young pitchers, good luck and gasoline fumes, he's bound to get a shot sometime in 2010, though probably only in a limited way. We like him as a starter, but some may prefer the fastball in the pen, especially after how effective David Price was in a limited relief role last year before 'graduating' to the rotation the following season. Right now, Davis might have the highest upside of any pitcher not named Strasburg.

Player Updates and Notes

Despite going 2-2 with a 3.72 ERA for the Rays at the end of 2009, rookie Wade Davis is in contention as a possible 2010 closer for a team that's very deep in starting pitchers.

Wade Davis gave up one earned run in four innings during his first start at Triple-A Durham. The big righthander struck out five, touching 96mph on the radar gun. He'll become the Rays' #1 pitching prospect the moment David Price returns to the big-league club. He's pretty much running in idle now, as he already has the mix of stuff and composure needed to succeed in MLB.

Tampa Bay's acquisition of Matt Garza bumps Davis down the depth chart a notch, likely delaying his debut for at least half a season. An injury or another trade could change things, of course.
