The Book on Hank Conger
Prospect Info
Hank Conger
Born 1/29/1988
C, LAA
He's been on the radar for a couple of years now, but this year Angels catcher Hyun Choi 'Hank' Conger (we're assuming that 'Hammerin' Hyun Choi' did not exactly roll off the tongue) has officially arrived as an elite hitting prospect.
The young whatever-his-name-is was known was one of the best HS bats in the 2006 class, and he's done nothing to tarnish that perception since, making consistent hard contact while rising the ranks in the minors. Most importantly, he's doing all that swatting from the catching position, which makes him of special interest to exasperated fantasy owners and red-faced Italian-American managers alike who are dying for some extra value from a place in their lineup that's often bone dry.
He'll get a shot in Anaheim as early as 2010, but 2012 looks like the sweet spot for his maximum impact.
Player Updates and Notes
Hank Conger was named the MVP of the Futures Game last night in Anaheim. His three-run homer put the game away for the US team, and it had to be especially sweet coming in his future home park. He's the Angels' top power threat, so without his premium position factored in, he has to be considered one of the top offensive prospects left in the minor leagues.

With the loss of Kendry Morales, the Los Angeles Angels are considering calling up the hot-hitting Hank Conger to fill the sudden slugging void, moving Mike Napoli to first base in the process. It's a bit earlier than expected, but Conger is batting .371 with a 1.076 OPS at Salt Lake this month, and is far and away the Angels' best offensive prospect.
