Sean West
Born 6/15/1986
LHP, FLA
He's thrown some of the best games of any Marlin prospect, and also some of the worst. It might be the awkward delivery from his 6-8 frame, or it might be a product of his max-effort delivery, but Sean West's pitches only do two things: miss bats or miss the strike zone. He's been working on a third pitch for awhile now, essential for success as a starter, but unless his delivery stabilizes, he looks like a two-pitch, two-batter lefty specialist to us right now... and a great one.
Player Updates and Notes
In a surprise move, the Marlins have called up their top pitching prospect, towering lefty Sean West, to make a start against the Tampa Bay Rays today. West, who was just promoted to AA two months ago, has already struck out 50 batters in just 42 innings at Jacksonville this year. It's a year too soon for this move to be permanent, so he'll probably go back down after making just the one start, but he's got major sleeper potential as the go-to prospect behind a shaky Marlins' rotation.

Sean West's name is coming up as a possible rotation replacement for the injured (and ineffective) Andrew Miller. The lefthanded West has a huge fastball and plus movement on his breaking balls, but has only recently shown signs of effective command.

Sean West threw six shutout innings for Double-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, striking out nine, walking two and allowing only two hits. He's been the Marlins' number one pitching prospect for awhile now despite control issues, but with a 23:5 K:BB ratio so far in 2009, it looks like he's ready to turn the corner.
