Born 3/6/1986

A powerful left-handed fireballer who can also command multiple offspeed pitches, Detwiler is one of the best lefthanded pitching prospects in baseball. His mid-nineties fastball is electric, and he's shown a superior ability to work both sides of the plate with it. He's added more than four inches to his height since his days dominating college ball, which means we've officially decided it's time to stop calling him 'smallish'. Unfortunately, the extra size seems to have mucked up his delivery a bit, too.

The Nationals, who took Detwiler in the first round, sixth overall in 2006, seem very serious about moving the developing ace forward on an accelerated schedule. After only 33 1/3 innings in the minors, Detwiler was granted a callup to injury-riddled Washington in late 2007, giving the major league staff a look at their developing young ace. He threw just one MLB inning in a live game, but the fact the Nationals were interested so soon shows that they were dying to get him onto their staff. There's no word what they thought of his right-handed hitting, however.

He took a step back in 2008, posting a ho-hum 4.86 ERA over 26 starts at high-A Potomac and earning at least another year in the minors. He remains a top-flight prospect, however. Watch for him to turn it back on this year.

Player Updates and Notes

In his first start at high-A Potomac, Ross Detwiler threw five shutout innings with seven strikeouts. He's on a fast track back to the majors, this time as a starter. He's a must-have in deep keeper leagues.

Ross Detwiler was reassigned to minor league camp yesterday, ending speculation that he may be kept as a reliever for Opening Day. He'll continue to prepare as a starter, and should get a shot in the Washington rotation sometime during the season.
