The Book on Madison Bumgarner
Prospect Info
Madison Bumgarner
Born 8/1/1989
LHP, SF
Such a name. Such a talent. A tall, strong lefthander, Bumgarner is the Giant pitcher most ready to follow Cain and Lincecum to glory by the Bay.
A fireballer with decent control, Bumgarner's been clocked as high as 96mph, though he struggled to break 90 in his taste of MLB ball last season. His breaking pitches are not as well-developed as that fastball, but they're coming along. A flame-throwing lefty like this is worth the time and investment, so while he should get some more MLB work in 2010, Giant fans should try to be patient while looking to 2011 as the timeframe for his arrival as a significant cog in the rebuilt Giant machine.
Player Updates and Notes
Madison Bumgarner was called up to San Francisco for a surprise start, making his MLB debut as a replacement for last-minute scratch Tim Lincecum on Tuesday night. Facing a San Diego Padres lineup that we'll charitably call AAAA, Bumgarner went five and one third innings, scattering five hits and giving up two runs. He might get another start or two down the stretch, but he's really auditioning for 2010 now.

Madison Bumgarner won't play in the big leagues this year unless injuries or other disasters make it necessary, according to Giants GM Brian Sabean. Asked by the Chronicle if he'd be seen in the majors this year, Sabean replied 'I would hope not. It would mean you're not going with the plan. It wouldn't be what we'd want for [his] development.'

Madison Bumgarner threw six shutout innings, giving up three hits striking out 10 for the Sally League GreenJackets last night. He's looking strong, and will likely be moved up a level soon.
