Once a promising slugger with only adequate defense, Soto had been filed away as a platoon specialist by hitting .344 vs. lefties at Triple-A, but only .245 vs. righties. The Cubs were originally expected to carry him as a backup or platoon catcher in 2008, but his breakthrough September convinced them to let Jason Kendall go and make Soto their everyday catcher in 2008. Whether he can keep up good numbers in an everyday role is still a question mark, but he has the attitude and work ethic to do it. Unless his 2007 was a mirage, Soto will be a top-10 catcher in MLB very soon.

Player Updates and Notes

Geovany Soto won the nod to start the All Star Game over Atlanta's Brian McCann. Soto, who's been one of the best catchers in baseball this year, looks like the easy pick for NL Rookie of the Year.

To nobody's surprise, Cubs catcher Geo Soto was named the National Rookie of the Month for April, 2008.

Geovany Soto smacked both of the Cubs home runs last night, each of them a three-run shot. The young Soto leads all MLB catchers in offensive output, and seems likely to make the All-Star team as a rookie. Along with "rookie" teammate Kosuke Fukudome, Soto is one of the season's biggest early success stories.
