Gerardo Parra
Born 5/6/1987
OF, ARZ
One of many Baby 'Backs yet to break into the Majors, the 20-year-old Parra is likely to open next season in AA ball at Mobile, where he ended 2008 by slashing .275/.341/.419 in 73 games. He projects as a doubles hitter with gap power, and his speed combines with capable fielding to make him a useful full-time outfielder, though he may be better suited to a corner than center. He's stolen just over 100 minor league bases to date at a high-70's clip, only a little off the average he needs to be a plus runner in the bigs.
Player Updates and Notes
Rookie Gerardo Parra hit his third home run of the season and added a triple in an interleague game against the Royals last night. He's been the best-hitting regular in the Diamondbacks offense for close to two months now, and is starting to look like a strong ROY contender in a weak NL field. His performance in the clutch has been exceptional. If the Diamondbacks were a more visible team in a less forgettable division, Parra would be all over the headlines right now.

After homering in his first MLB at-bat, rookie Gerardo Parra hasn't let up. After three weeks, the lefthanded slugger is hitting .319, including a ridiculous .722 with runners in scoring position. He's been exactly the catalyst the moribund Diamondbacks hoped for. Parra was hitting .364 before his callup, so while he's bound to cool off eventually, his ability and productivity appear to be legit.

With a hat-tip to Jordan Schafer, Diamondbacks rookie Gerardo Parra homered in his first major-league at-bat yesterday. Most scouts don't think he's quite ready to play every day in MLB yet, but with Arizona desperate to find a spark, expect their top hitting prospect to get every chance to succeed.
