The Book on Chris Perez

Prospect Info

CLEChris Perez
Born 7/1/1985
RHP, CLE

A University of Miami alumnus with a hot fastball and erratic control, Perez was given a shot at the Cardinal closer role toward the end of 2008, and while he converted a number of quick saves, he also scared coaches with erratic control and far too many walks.

He has electric stuff and a solid, aggressive approach to hitters, though, so if he can keep the ball down, he has power closer written all over him.

Player Updates and Notes

Chris Perez has been traded to the Cleveland Indians as part of a two-player deal for Mark DeRosa, according to the Post-Dispatch. While he's still a quality prospect, his high-fastball tendencies won't always play well in the American League, so his overall value could take a hit here. Still, he'll be closer to closing with only Kerry Wood in the way.

Jason Motte has converted four of five save opportunities in the last ten days while filling in for a sideline Chris Perez. While the younger Perez remains the better long-term bet, Motte now looks more likely to enter the season as the Cards' closer.
