The Book on Pedro Alvarez

Prospect Info

PITPedro Alvarez
Born 2/6/1987
3B, PIT

A left-handed power hitting third baseman, Alvarez has a very very high ceiling and is almost big-league ready. He could be a big part of a devastating future Pittsburgh lineup. He's now fully-recovered from a hamate bone he broke in 2007; all reports are positive.

An offensive sleeper for 2010, depending on how deeply the Pirates shake up their roster, and likely to be playing every day by 2011.

Player Updates and Notes

Pedro Alvarez will join the Pirates in time for today's game, according to ESPN. Alvarez, Pittsburgh's top prospect, will be installed as the everyday third baseman immediately, moving Andy LaRoche to a utility role. Alvarez will bring plus power to a lineup that sorely needs it, as the Pirates rank dead last in runs scored at the start of play today. Pedro's high strikeout rate in the minors is also likely to appear at the higher level of play, of course.
