The Book on Mike Stanton
Prospect Info
Mike Stanton
Born 11/8/1989
OF, FLA
A high-school outfielder drafted 76th overall in 2007, Stanton went on to destroy high A Jupiter in 2009, raking at a .294/.390/.578 clip while adding 12 home runs in 50 games. His average suffered a bit after a promotion to AA Jacksonville, but his power remained (16 more home runs and a .455 slugging average.) A talented overall player with the tools to fit in at almost any position, he's being worked in right field at present, but could be moved almost anywhere else in the future. His plus power from the right side is aided by studious preparation and discipline beyond his young age. In the field, he has a plus arm, great range and a winning attitude. A rising star in Florida, don't be surprised to see him patrolling center or right for the Marlins as soon as late 2010.
Player Updates and Notes
Mike Stanton continued to prove the old adage that you never see a good breaking ball until you reach the majors. The all-or-nothing slugger has homered twice in his first 17 games, but has also struck out an eye-popping 29 times for a .215 average. Finally, the Marlins have their own Carlos Pena.

Mike Stanton had three hits, all singles, in his MLB debut. He also struck out once, so the Stanton homer-to-strikeout ratio starts out at 0:1. It'll be an active counter.

Mike Stanton is expected to be called up to join the Marlins in time for Tuesday's game in Philadelphia. The hot-hitting outfielder has been mashing all spring and leads the AA Southern League in home runs, so expectations are high. Stanton follows in the footsteps of other SL home run champs to get early looks, including Greg Halman (2009), Jake Fox (2008), Brendan Katin (2007), Jerry Gil (2006) and Brandon Sing (2005). Luckily for the Marlins, Stanton is generally expected to have better staying power.

Mike Stanton blasted a home run off lefthander Francisco Liriano yesterday, raising eyebrows and his spring batting line. He has a shot at opening the season on the Marlins roster, but he'd be better served with regular playing time in AA while he waits for a breakout opportunity later this year.

According to MLB.com, there is an increasing chance that top outfield prospect Mike Stanton could break camp with the MLB Marlins. Stanton did not dominate AA last season, and was widely expected to return there in 2010, but his spring bat (including two home runs in three games) is raising eyebrows all over Florida. As a comparison, the last 20 year old the Marlins moved to the major leagues was Miguel Cabrera.
