The Book on Jorge Campillo
Prospect Info
Jorge Campillo
Born 8/10/1978
RHP, ATL
A mature rookie who spent parts of the last three years up and down in the Seattle Mariners system, Mexican righthander Jorge Campillo is one of very few genuine screwball artists in baseball today. He's never been given a legitimate shot in the rotation (the Mariners lived up to their reputation for poor pitching management by using Campillo's 90mph fastball in 17 short relief innings), but he projects much better as a starter. When he's on, his screwball can be near-unhittable, while his change and curve are also above average servings. It should be interesting to see how the much-smarter Atlanta brain trust handles Campillo. He could be a dark horse to break out.
Player Updates and Notes
Continuing his magic, Brave Jorge Campillo dominated the Brewers today, befuddling them with a mix of breaking balls. Only Russ Branyan's solo homer disturbed the six-strikeout, no-walk performance. He's 2-0 with an 0.98 ERA in three starts.

Jorge Campillo added four more shutout innings to his 2008 resume last night before leaving in the fifth with a blister problem. His ERA is down to 0.86. He could miss a start, depending on how his finger heals. As it is, he's slated to face Milwaukee on Thursday.

Jorge Campillo, making his first start in three years, struck out seven to shut out the Mets last night. According to manager Bobby Cox, Campillo's crazy stuff, which made the Mets look bad all night long, "looked like Maddux in his prime."
