The Book on Greg Halman
Prospect Info
Greg Halman
Born 8/26/1987
OF, SEA
A slow-rising prospect who finally appears to be on the verge of breaking into the top ranks, Mariner center-field prospect Greg Halman is a tall, slender athlete with plus speed, tantalizing raw power, and not even a whisper of plate discipline. Halman, drafted as a 16 year-old free agent from the Netherlands, was the Dutch Professional League's MVP at 18. Last year, he smashed 25 home runs at AA West Tennessee, which looks pretty darn impressive until you study the rest of his line. In 457 at bats (121 games), Halman struck out an unbelievable 183 times. Somewhere, Mark Reynolds is really pulling for this guy.
Concerns about his swinginess notwithstanding, at least his power has proven to be legit. It's hard to believe the M's would give him too many MLB at-bats until he learns how to cut down on the whiffage, so it'll probably be another year or two before he gets much of an opportunity in Marinerville.
