The Book on Starlin Castro

Prospect Info

A darling prospect in the Cubs system, Dominican teenager Starlin Castro is seen by many scouts as Chicago's future franchise shortstop. He has a soft glove, strong arm and plus range, so he should stick at the position. Meanwhile, he has the bat control and discipline to hit near-.300 while slashing line drives to all fields. His speed is only a tick above-average, and he hasn't any power to speak of, but that shouldn't matter. As long as he gets enough reps over the next season or two, he could be a regular fixture at Wrigley thereafter. Of course, that's assuming the Cubs don't panic and bring him up sooner than that.

Player Updates and Notes

Apparently determined to prove the doubters wrong, shortstop Starlin Castro drove in a debut record six runs last night in his first MLB game. This immediately makes him the best hitter in the entire Cubs lineup.

The Chicago Cubs are bringing shortstop Starlin Castro all the way up to the majors for this weekend's series against the Cincinnati Reds. Fans of the woeful Cubs have been clamoring for Castro ever since the team melted down in mid-April. Castro will bring some speed and excitement to the Cubs lineup, but while he's been a high-contact, low-power hitter in the minors until now, it remains an open question whether his bat will produce enough to stick at the top level so soon. His upside appears to be in the Yunel Escobar category.
