The Book on Pablo Sandoval
Prospect Info
Pablo Sandoval
Born 8/11/1986
C, SF
A Venezualan hit machine who broke .350 at three levels of play in 2008, this fast-rising and toolsy prospect could be clubbing balls into McCovey Cove, or at least into the outfield corners, in another year or two. He may not stick at catcher (and with Buster Posey on his back, he may not have to) but it shouldn't hold him back, as he can play second, third or either corner outfield position quite well, and its his bat that will get him to the Big Leagues.
Player Updates and Notes
After another 2-for-4 night, Pablo Sandoval is now hitting a rather unbelievable .342 with three homers. He's clearly ready for MLB. The only question is whether the Giants, who have been playing the youngster every day this month, will let him rack up enough ABs to mess up his rookie eligibility for next year.

Through his first fifteen big-league games, Pablo Sandoval 22-for-56 (.393) with six strikeouts and one walk (.404 OBP), and one home run (.554 slugging). It seems unlikely he could really be this good, but he did hit .350/.394/.578 in the minors this year, so it's possible. The Giants have already deployed him at first, third and catcher. If he stays hot, he's got an excellent shot at a full-time job with 2009's rebuilding Giants.

Pablo Sandoval has been called up to fill in on an injury-reduced Giants bench. He'll likely see starts at first base, catcher, and in the outfield as the Giants figure out what they've got here. He was hitting .330 in the minors, but he's never projected as a star and now he's living in the shadow of 2008 signee Buster Posey. Still, unless he hits .120, he'll probably hang around for September, though he's bound to open 2009 in AA no matter what.
