Originally drafted by the Cubs, righthander Randy Wells is a strikeout pitcher who's been simmering in the system system for the last couple of seasons. A catcher in college, he's learned to mix a curve with his 94mph heat as a pro. While most have seen him as a relief candidate, the Cubs seem re-determined to deploy him as a starter.

Player Updates and Notes

With a seven inning victory against the Reds last night, 27-year old 'rookie' Randy Wells is now 8-4 with a 2.73 ERA. He's still a contact pitcher, which could come back to bite him later, but if he keeps this up, the voters could overlook his position and his age and make him a surprise Rookie of the Year contender.

Randy Wells has gone 0-2 in his first two starts since being called up to fill in the Zambrano-less (and then Harden-free) Cubs rotation, but he's pitched well enough to mark a 1.80 ERA. He should continue to get starts until he shows the rough edges that gave him a 4+ ERA in AA last year. Drawing the stickless Braves on Monday is a good start.
