The Book on Jenrry Mejia

Prospect Info

NYMJenrry Mejia
Born 10/11/1989
RHP, NYM

An international signee who immediately jumped to the top of the Mets' pitching prospect chart, young Jenrry Meija is one of the few bright spots in a downtrodden farm system. The righthander is the proud owner of easy heat in the form of a mid-90s fastball and a very good, deceptive change. Jenrry's control has been better than expected for such a young player, and despite an 0-5, 4.47 looksee in 2009, he looks ready to tackle a full season of AA ball in 2010.

Player Updates and Notes

Jenrry Mejia was pulled from a AA start this afternoon complaining of 'shoulder soreness', which isn't a good sign from a pitcher whose endurance the Mets were trying to extend. He'll be shut down indefinitely while the team reevaluates its options. A re-return to bullpen work isn't out of the question.

Sometimes even The Post gets it right: the Mets are indeed committed to using Jennry Mejia as a reliever for the foreseeable future, choosing to maximize his value to the 2010 club, even if that means losing a possibly bigger contribution as a starter down the road. He's been deployed three times in the last four days, against the Marlins and Nationals, for a single inning each time. While he gave up a run in his debut, he held the mighty Nats scoreless in his subsequent appearances.

The New York Post reports that the Mets are 'increasingly likely' to accelerate Jenrry Mejia and move him into a major league bullpen role, rather than develop him more slowly as a starter. This is great news to anyone hoping the Mets can contend right away, bad news to anyone banking on Mejia as a future ace.
