According to the Sun Sentinel, the Marlins are planning to start young Adeiny Hechavarria at shorstop in 2013, rather than the established Yunel Escobar. Since Escobar's reputation doesn't exactly include an easy-going adaptability, we expect that means that Escobar's days in Miami are numbered already.

Cuban shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria was shipped to Miami today as part of the twelve player megatrade that netted Jose Reyes and Josh Johnson for the Blue Jays. While he may officially compete with the also-acquired Yunel Escobar for the starting shortstop job, its more likely both will make the depleted Marlin roster, with one of the two moving to second base.

Two months into 2012, Adeiny Hechavarria's adjustment period looks to be very much a thing of the past, and he is continuing to live up to the offensive potential scouts saw in the young Cuban two seasons ago. After sixty games at AAA Vegas, Hechavarria's .332/.376/.461 line comes out as a .837 OPS, plenty good enough for a pro shortstop. We'd like to see him take a few more walks, but that's nitpicking: we should see him in Toronto very soon.
