News and Notes

As further proof that spring training games don't matter, we present Mariner prospect Brandon Maurer. Maurer was lights-out in March, earning a spot in the Mariner rotation without ever playing a game at AAA. But after giving up six runs in his first MLB start last week, Maurer gave up six more in the first inning of his second start tonight. Maybe some time in minors wouldn't be such a bad idea after all. Kameron Loe would be the obvious fill-in if the M's skip Maurer next time, with lefty prospects Danny Hultzen and James Paxton looming soon after.

Brandon Maurer's MLB debut didn't exactly go as planned, as the rookie gave up six earned runs in six plus innings against the A's today. He actually had the game reasonably well in hand until the sixth, when a tiring Maurer surrendered four consecutive hits, allowing the A's to break a 3-2 game open into a 6-2 one. He'll return next week, a little wiser for an easier assignment vs Houston.

Brandon Maurer is doing everything right to win a spot in the Mariners' starting rotation. The youngster, overshadowed by the system's bigger names, has quietly pitched through three terrific starts and several relief appearances this spring. Maurer's stat line (3-1, 0.94 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) is better than any other pitcher who's thrown 20 or more innings this spring. Insert blinking red sleeper light here.
