A mature pitching prospect, righthander David Hale is a local Georgia boy who attended Princeton before being drafted by the Braves back in 2009. Hale's path through the minors has been a long but steady one, recently racking up a 3.77, 1.29 season at AA Mississippi. Since he's continued to improve even while moving up to higher levels, he looks to be on a tidy trajectory for MLB in 2014, as either a long-reliever or starter.

News and Notes

David Hale have up a run in the first inning last night, then shut out the Reds for his first victory of the season. Hale has been very impressive as an emergency fill-in (2.31 ERA, 2.31 WHIP in four starts) but could actually lose his spot in the rotation when lefty Mike Minor returns next week. If there's a blemish on Hale's record so far, it's his walk rate, but other than that he looks every bit the professional young starter the Braves hoped they had in stock. Even if he doesn't stick right now, and moves to AAA to keep his work regular, he'll return to the rotation later this year.

Lost in the hubbub over Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy, David Hale stands to sneak into the Braves' rotation this April. A mature rookie who is more about pitchability than stuff, Hale should be able to handle the heightened pressure, and may even thrive with the opportunity.
